NIOS is popularly known as National institute of Open schooling is the board of education for Distance education under the Union government of India. NIOS was established by ministry of Human resource development of the government of India in the year 1989 to provide qualitative education inexpensively in remote areas.

The NIOS is a body that comes under the national board which takes care of the examinations for secondary and senior secondary examinations of open schools similar to the CBSE and the CISCE. There are about 1.5 million students from 2004-2009 at secondary and senior secondary levels and enrolls about 350,000 students annually which make it the largest open schooling system in the world. There are three level courses which includes:-

► OBE ‘A ‘level course -equivalent to class III
► OBE ‘B’ level course – equivalent to class V
► OBE ‘C’ level course – equivalent to class VIII
► Secondary course – equivalent to class X
► Senior secondary course – equivalent to class XII
► Vocational education courses
► Life enrichment programs

All these levels constitute an important role in the development or growth of students. The examinations under NIOS are held twice in a year in the months of April-May and October-November on the dates fixed by the board. This step of the board has enabled the students to pursue education and create better future prospects for their own self.
